The east London borough of Newham is using an ultra-fast technology to wire up its schools. XDSL gives a speed of up to two megabytes per second on ordinary telephone lines, faster than the ISDN lines many schools use, and costs a fixed pound;586 a year per school regardless of the level of use. The pound;3 million programme, implemented with networking firm Mase, will link Newham’s 13 secondaries and 64 primaries by the end of next year.
