In its 30 years on air, the BBC’s Newsround has become something of an institution. So it’s a surprise that a full online service has been so far unavailable. But young news junkies can now get their rolling news fix at www.bbc.co.uknewsround Like the TV programme, the online service covers national and international news agendas and subjects of specific interest to a younger audience. You can log on and find out about anthrax or the Northern Ireland peace process, or you can gen up on Harry Potter, games consoles and rollercoasters. There are also sections on sport, music, TV and film, and animals.

Interactive elements include games, quizzes and a commentary box. Wannabe reporters can send in their own reports to Press Pack. When the section expands it could be the most interesting part of the site. There’s little at the moment, but the report from a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Karachi provides a sobering account of what life is like when the war against terror arrives on your doorstep.
