No such thing as a free laptop

I have been “nominated” for a laptop as part of a college initiative to provide portable PCs for all staff. I am required to complete an online computer course. I fear that this is a way of telling staff that taking work home should be the norm and that workload will grow as staff get kitted out with the latest hardware. I am considering rejecting the offer.

If you are running an old PC with out-of-date software the opportunity for something slick should not be turned down. Nor should the chance to take an online course. Your final point does have a ring of truth, although it may be that you are simply teaching online from home in the college of the future rather than going into work to teach face-to-face.
