No to trickle-down training;Letter

I congratulate the Department for Education and Employment on the quality of the National Numeracy Strategy handbook. However, colleagues who have taken part in the three days’ numeracy training report that it is “good in parts”.

Subject co-ordinators will disseminate their training to colleagues in school. Many will do this well, but good classroom practitioners are not necessarily good trainers. As a classroom teacher, I object to the method of training that I will receive. “Cascading” is a poor substitute for the real thing. The numeracy hour is a different way of teaching and we deserve professional training.
