A newly-qualified teacher who failed her induction year has had her appeal dismissed after England’s General Teaching Council found she had not planned her lessons adequately.
It heard that although Kirsten Ellor, who taught at Thelwell junior school, Warrington, had planned lessons there was little evidence that pupils had done the work.
Ms Ellor was given a two-term extension because the school failed to provide structured support and did not allow her the 10 per cent reduction in contact time required for new teachers in their induction year.
The GTC was told that she was responsible for 82 children in three classes, specialising in maths.
The panel criticised the school. Ralph Ullmann, committee chair, said:
“Teaching so many children one subject instead of focusing on a single class means it is difficult for the teacher to bond with pupils.”
