Claims by Ofsted that lads’ magazines are a good source of sex education are “total rubbish” according to a sexual health specialist. Dr Petra Boynton, of University College London, has dismissed publications such as Nuts and Zoo as part of the problem rather than the solution.

“It has been claimed that lads’ magazines are helping young men get advice, but everyone working in this area knows that’s rubbish,” she said. “The problem is not that they are explicit. But to be helpful they need to give straightforward answers. Jodie Marsh as an agony aunt is not going to help tackle the problems young men have.”

Ofsted praised lads’ magazines in its report into personal, social and health education, claiming they were a good substitute for parental advice.
