The Adult Learning Inspectorate is still opposed to a merger with the Office for Standards in Education which could follow a consultation exercise being carried out by the Government.
The ALI’s magazine, Talisman, is now canvassing opinion from the organisations it inspects - including colleges and other training organisations.
Writing in the September issue, David Sherlock, the ALI’s chief inspector, said: “In suggesting there may be ways of making progress in adult learning and skills, other than by merging the ALI and Ofsted, the ALI is not moved by a spirit of opposition.
“We are, on the contrary, determined to work with the Government and the learning and skills sector to find the best way forward to meet the challenges our country faces.”
The possibility of merger was announced by Gordon Brown, the chancellor, as part of a wider attempt to reduce the number of government quangos.
The ALI argues that it provides a distinctive service, including the Excalibur website, which offers support services to colleges.
