The Tories have announced that they would curb the high salaries paid in the public sector. Would they also reverse the introduction of privatisation in the public sector, which has been responsible for encouraging those high salaries?

As an exhibitor at the NUT conference, I found it depressing to hear the number of teachers - some I know to be brilliant - who are planning to leave the profession with no job in mind. Equally depressing were the stories of bullying, persistent punitive observations and ignorant inspectors. Almost universally resented was the lack of freedom to educate rather than instruct.

Jane Eades, London.
