All but one of Buckinghamshire’s 34 school swimming pools have been forced to close following criticism triggered by the death of an 11-year-old boy.

Nathan Matthews, a pupil at Stokenchurch primary near High Wycombe drowned during a swimming lesson at Thame Leisure Centre, Oxfordshire last July. A Health and Safety Executive investigation said Buckinghamshire council lacked “effective written procedures for safe operation of the pools”. The criticism does not directly refer to Nathan’s death.
