Porpoises are dolphins’ smaller, darker and more elusive cousins. In northern Europe, their numbers are in serious decline, with perhaps 10,000 dying each year from pollution or from being tangled in fishing gear. Making Waves to Protect Porpoises is a small but effective study pack from the International Fund for Animal Welfare for key stage 2 pupils. It describes the threats but also suggests how children might help.

They can also follow a research project in Falmouth, where porpoises’ own techniques of echolocation are being used to support their welfare.
