LABOUR will promise to cut the number of children living in poverty by a further one million at the next election.
In a speech to the Child Poverty Action Group Chancellor Gordon Brown claimed Labour had already helped 1.2 millin children out of poverty. He also announced 50 local “children’s funds” to back non-government initiatives to tackle the problem. Four million children were deemed to be living in poverty when Labour was elected in 1997.
