A school teacher from Inverness was recovering in hospital last week after being stabbed while walking in Edinburgh. David Nisbet, 25, a principal teacher of science at Kingussie High, was attacked in Raeburn Place at about 8.40pm on 3 April. He had to undergo emergency head surgery, but was said to be recovering well at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Pupils’ waistlines grow

The waistlines of girls starting secondary school have grown more than three inches in 30 years, a new study has shown. The figures, from Shape GB’s National Childrenswear Survey, were collected from 3D scans of over 2,500 children. They also revealed 11-year-old boys have bigger waist, chest and hip measurements than the same age group 30 years ago.

EIS hierarchy campaign

Members of the EIS teachers’ union have launched an online campaign against the organisation’s hierarchy. In an online poll on Facebook site of the campaign, entitled Reject EIS, more than 90 per cent of members indicated they do not trust the union’s management after it recommended acceptance of a pay deal rejected by other unions.

Almost one-third of children think cucumbers grow in the ground and half cannot recognise lavender, a poll commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society has found. The poll, which questioned 1,000 children aged six to 16, also found while 82 per cent had access to a garden, a mere 40 per cent used it more than once a week.
