Geography. Visit the local library. Plot a route to the local library using Google Earth (www.earth.google.com).

Literacy. Turn the role play area into a library. Make a class library using books made by the children. Make a class book as a scroll. Compare the direction of writing in Western, Middle Eastern and Chinese books.

Learn about alphabetical ordercataloguing systems (put “book cataloguing”

into a search engine). Consider the descriptions of libraries in The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco and Sourcery by Terry Pratchett.

ICT. Have a class discussion about the differences between reading an actual book and reading one online, eg www.literature.org. Design a library for the 21st century.

Art and design. Look at and copy illuminated texts (visit British Library images online). Get children to make copies of each others’ writing and pictures. Try freehand pattern-making and potato-printing.
