The police have asked to inspect our files to check pupils’ photographs against their own of unidentified suspects. Must we comply, or does this infringe the Data Protection Act?
Pupils’ personal files are protected by the Data Protection Act and I should be unhappy about giing the police free access to them. On the other hand, it is the duty of every citizen to assist the police with their enquiries and I should be pleased to co-operate with them by looking at their “rogues’ gallery” and telling them if I recognised my pupils among them.
