IN the world of the market, the consumer is king. Now it appears teachers must ask their customers what they think, even if they’re only five years old.
Teachers in Halifax’s education action zone complained after being told to hand out a four-page survey asking primary and secondary pupils about their aspirations and attitudes to learning.
It also asked what they thought of school, whether teachers listened to them and treated them fairly, ad if lessons were boring.
The National Union of Teachers fears answers could determine performance pay. However, zone managers say teachers cannot be identified by the forms, which will be used only for research by Huddersfield University.
It is likely to be a growing trend. Management consultants Hay McBer, hired by the Government to define effective teaching, has designed a pupil survey to measure teachers’ impact on their class.
