CHILDREN at a Harrogate school let their imaginations run riot when they produced curry and cola flavoured bread.

The nine to 11-year-olds who attend Western primary created speciality ciabatta bread for the Primary Engineers scheme organised by North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership.

Flavours ranged from Ribena, orange, banana and cola to curry, garlic and cardamom.

Design and technology co-ordinator John Burgess said: “The kids liked getting their hands messy and wearing bakers’ hats.”

Howards Bakery in Harrogate worked with the schoolon the project. Owner Nick Carey visited the young bakers and selected the most commercially viable bread - garlic and cardamom.

Mr Burgess said: “Mr Carey will bake it and sell it at his shop. This helped the children realise that work in the classroom does have a link to the world outside.”

He added that he hoped that the Primary Engineers scheme would secure continued government funding. He said: “This scheme gives low-achieving pupils the opportunity to achieve in the classroom and furnishes them with valuable self-esteem.”
