COLLEGES are being accused of institutional racism for failing to recruit enough staff from the ethnic minorities.

Five per cent of their employees are non-white, according to research by the Commission for Black Staff in Further Education.

The commission, which includes Asians in its definition of “black”, says 3 per cent of lecturers are non-white and only two English principals are non-white The proportion of non-whites in Britain is 7.3 per cent.

Mike Peters, commission chair, said: “The majority of colleges do not recognise there is a problem.

“The ignorance and complacency of colleges about the issue of the employment of black staff constitutes institutional racism.”

A commission spokesman said: “In many colleges, students are unlikely to see a black lecturer.”
