THE BIGTRACK MOUSE. pound;55 or pound;79 with ability sockets. www.keytools.com

The use of the standard computer mouse is a complex motor task with three movements in one: grasp, move and click. Trackballs or rollerballs are adapted mouse designs. The BIGtrack mouse is one of the best on the market.

Imagine your standard mouse inverted, 10 times bigger, in robust plastic with a three inch, brightly coloured ball to control the on-screen cursor. It uses two large buttons to make the clicks. From its packaging, you only need to plug and play using either the PS2 or USB capability for PC or Mac. The switch-adapted version comes with two extra controls and would be a prerequisite for pupils with complex learning disabilities. A useful feature for teaching is its ability to be used with a second standard mouse. This enables a mentor to assist the learner.

Although the mouse comes with a hefty price tag, it is functional, tough, easy to use and is indispensable. Special access technology has a tremendous impact on individual motivation, participation in the curriculum and achievement.
