Revolutionaries need some festive RR

After a decade of continuous educational revolution, the last thing this country needs is advice from a “change for the sake of change” zealot like Joel Klein, the former chancellor of New York City’s schools (”‘We are not being bold enough’, reformer says”, 29 November). Suggesting that policymakers go further with their reform agenda, even when things are working perfectly, is like asking England football manager Roy Hodgson to substitute Wayne Rooney just before a penalty shoot-out with Germany in order to demonstrate his risk-taking credentials. Continually moving the goalposts undermines morale and produces stressed, resentful and confused teachers who will be less able than ever to deliver Mr Klein’s desired outcome: preparing children for the world of work in the 21st century. Let’s hope Santa brings Mr Klein and education secretary for England Michael Gove some festive tranquillisers this Christmas.
