Dr Peter Borrows Director of CLEAPSS, Brunel University, Uxbridge

I was pleased to see the prominence given to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s report Surely That’s Banned? (“Lessons that go with a bang”, TES Magazine, December 15). But it was a pity some credit was not given to CLEAPSS, the advisory service on school science and the body commissioned by the society to produce the report.

The article rightly emphasises the need for a risk assessment before undertaking hazardous activities. The CLEAPSS website (www.cleapss.

org.uksecfr.htm) gives a list (PS69: Banned Chemicals and Other Myths) of the 40 activities covered in the RSC report, plus a further 20. More important, it indicates where to find guidance (in CLEAPSS publications) on how to carry out each one safely.
