EVEN the brightest student can find examinations a headache. But at Thomas Rotherham College in Yorkshire there has been an added test of concentration - the noise of building works on its sports centre.

Ben Miskell, 18, who had to endure the commotion during his A-level exam, has started an online petition for students and parents to protest against the disruption. He says the exam was blighted by hammering noies and what sounded like the rumble of construction vehicles.

He also says the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance should take the disruption into account when it marks the papers.

In its defence, the college says the number of exams generated by the AS level has made it hard to avoid disturbance to students.

The petition website has been set up at www.petitiononline.comtrc
