IRELAND. All 40,000 teachers and 900,000 primary and secondary school pupils will have their own e-mail addresses by next June, the government has announced, writes John Walshe.

At least 60,000 multimedia computers will be installed in schools equipped with a high-capacity telephone line (ISDN) with free installation and rental. Each school will receive free use of the Internet. Training will be provided for at least 20,000 teachers.

Education and science minister Michael Martin has secured Pounds 36 million for the programme in addition to the Pounds 9m promised by Telecom Eireann. He said it was one of the most ambitious state-funded programmes of its type in the world.
