KS 4: Compare the structure and properties of diamond and graphite. Use the diagrams and text to help pupils understand the fascinating relationship.
Diamond is hard, strong, able to refract light - and look beautiful.
Graphite is black, the only non-metal to conduct electricity, is used in pencils and as a lubricant. These properties should be demonstrated to pupils - definitely the graphite, if not the diamond. Build models using molecular model kits or cocktail sticks and jelly babies.
