What the lesson is about

Help pupils to understand the difference between useful and dangerous bacteria with TES Resources content partner e-Bug. This is a free, interactive website, funded by the European Commission, where pupils can delve into the world of microbes through stimulating games and activities.

It is divided into three areas: junior, senior and teachers. Both pupil sections offer a fact file on diseases, revision guide, games, quiz and scientists’ hall of fame. Pupils are encouraged to investigate which microbes are lurking in their houses. Fast-paced computer games teach them how to kill bacteria and viruses, keep a kitchen clean and prevent germs spreading. The teacher section includes detailed lesson plans, student activities, animations and demonstrations.

The website keeps pupils engaged and encourages them to explore the topics. Lesson plans are concise and well-presented with animations that make even non-specialists feel like microbe experts.

Check out its TES Resources profile for direct links to areas such as immunity.

What else?

Mariannseb shares a topical lesson on solar flares to underline the importance of science news coverage. Using YouTube clips and a newspaper extract, Mariannseb’s lesson gets pupils to consider how people might have reacted had they not known about the flares, and why it’s important for science to be in the news.

And another thing .

Inspired by a visit from the exotic animals of Tropical Inc (www.tropicalinc.com), Year 8 (S1) pupils from King Henry VIII School in Abergavenny, Wales, recorded their experiences in their own iBooks. The video tutorials give step-by-step guides to iBooks Author and explain how pupils created their multi-touch books for the iPad.
