An Ayrshire aeronautical engineer has been named Scotland’s top apprentice at Skills Development Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards - one of the new Youth Employment Minister’s first official engagements.

Angela Constance saw Jamie Gray, 22, a former catering assistant at Cross- house Hospital, Kilmarnock, pick up the “outstanding achievement” award for his work as a quality engineering apprentice at Spirit Aero-Systems Ltd in Prestwick.

The judging criteria included potential for the future, Modern Apprenticeship best practice and benefits to business - he was judged to embody all three.

The 10th annual Modern Apprenticeship Awards, sponsored by HP and held at the Glasgow Science Centre, showcased the achievements of employers, apprentices and organisations who have demonstrated initiative, enterprise and outstanding commitment to developing Scotland’s skills and economy.
