LECTURERS will vote this week on an historic pay settlement proposed by unions and college leaders. If accepted, it will see starting salaries for qualified lecturers rise above those of schoolteachers and establish a minimum wage of pound;5 per hour for support staff from April 2003.

The offer, strongly recommended by six unions including Natfhe and Unison, was agreed with the Association of Colleges after the promise of an extra pound;1.2 billion in funding for the FE sector by Education Secretary Charles Clarke.

Natfhe will ballot more than 30,000 of its members between February 26 and March 12.

The pay offer was announced on February 10 but the union decided to delay the ballot until the end of the half-term break.
