Like most young children, Hannah likes to play games and wants to shout out the answer in class. But for her these things are often difficult because she has selective mutism. A new book by Maggie Johnson and Alison Wintgens called Can I Tell You About Selective Mutism? (Jessica Kingsley Publishers) tells Hannah’s story.

What is it?

A short story that can be read in class or at home. Each page has a large image that shows how Hannah feels at playtime or visiting relatives, for example. The book has a selection of tips for teachers and parents to help pupils with selective mutism to develop the confidence to speak at their own pace. There is also a reference list of DVDs, websites and books for further reading.

Why is it useful?

The book is designed to help children conquer their anxiety. It should also help other pupils understand the problems faced by those with selective mutism - and how pressure can make them feel even less confident about speaking. A great, pupil-friendly resource.
