Name: Norma Redfearn. Position: headteacher of West Walker primary school, Newcastle. Norma was the first headteacher to receive a prize for public management leadership from the Office for Public Management in 1997.
Q If you had David Blunkett’s budget what would your priority be?
A I would put money into raising literacy and numeracy standards. I would also concentrate on bringing primary classes down to 25 and attach a classroom assistant to every class.
Q If you had a blank cheque for your own school what would you buy?
A I would ensure that the school was warm and dry with modern toilets and would refurbish classrooms so they were bright, airy and well equipped. And I’d make sure that the school grounds were well kept, safe and stimulating.
Q What treat would you buy yourself?
A I would wish for less paperwork. That way, I’d have more time to spend with pupils and to enjoy some simple leisure activities.
