Showtime for science

This year’s Education Show is packed full of useful ideas for science teachers and technicians.

One new product is the Insectlore Butterfly Pavilion. Observing the butterfly life cycle is easy and convenient as caterpillars take three to five weeks to grow, pupate and hatch inside the 63cm-high re-usable mesh butterfly house. The kit comes complete with caterpillars (despatched March-September), food and instructions.

Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils will benefit from the Cambridge Brain Box Primary Electronics Kit. Simple colour-coded components - including switches, buzzers, connectors and motors - click firmly into place on a plastic circuit board.

There are clear instructions on how to make the circuits, and teacher resource material links activities with the QCA schemes. Each kit is suitable for groups of two or three pupils at a time, and costs only pound;9.99.

From A amp; C Black, the Developing Science series of books contains teacher notes and photocopiable resources to help primary pupils understand the basic principles of science.

Books for reception and Year 1 cover the core curriculum and encourage pupils to develop their use of scientific language as well as collecting and evaluating evidence. Clear activity sheets complement core class work and can be used as extension activities for more able pupils.

Books for Years 5 and 6 will be available from this month.

The exhibition’s range of science seminars includes AdrianFenton, from the National Association for Special Educational Needs (NASEN), who will be showcasing resources to help in the teaching of science to special needs pupils.

His seminar includes practical information on investigations, focus activities, symbols and pictures as well as supporting advice on special educational needs in the science department.

Mr Fenton will also look at resources from the ISSEN CD-Rom, a collaboration between NASEN and the Association for Science Education.

Inclusive Science and Special Educational Needs: Resources, Ideas and Approaches will be held at 3.30pm on Friday March 12 in B10.

Mark Biddiss will be presenting Science and Thinking Skills at 11.45am on Saturday March 13 in C12.

He promises to provide ideas to inspire pupils’ scientific thinking skills at Key Stages 1 and 2. Emphasis will be placed on useful, hands-on tips for activities which aim to develop pupils’ problem solving and reasoning skills.

This is all achieved through fun, magical and even mysterious approaches to presenting scientific concepts and investigations in the classroom.
