BBC Education: Essential Guide to Rocks

www.bbc.co.ukeducationrocks

Here’s a site which could awaken the amateur geologist in all of us.

There’s an emphasis on relating the earth sciences to everyday life, from an exploration of the geology of the bathroom (where did the clay that your lavatory pan is made of come from?) to an inspiring set of virtual field trips in various cities, chipping away at the stones of landmark buildings.

An interactive timeline brings to life the rock and fossil-history of the British Isles over the past 575 million years.

The set-piece, however, is a two-minute animation covering the history of the planet, from Big Bang through to the emergence of humans in the final seconds. An action replay button for the continental drift sequence is irresistible.
