Gleaner Online. www.go-jamaica.com
The web site of the Jamaican daily newspaper has been buzzing even more than usual lately, what with the Windrush celebrations and the Reggae Boyz’ sadly brief adventure in France.
It was the Gleaner which, 50 years ago, carried an ad for 300 berths to England on the troopship SS Empire Windrush. Look up the June 22 1998 edition in the archive for a Jamaican perspective on the voyage and what followed.
There’s much more to this site, which, in the course of providing daily helpings of home news and views for Jamaicans everywhere, has built itself up into a sometimes idiosyncratic and generally authoritative resource on the island.
Alongside the news and archives, there are guides to the island, its economy, geography and history - directed chiefly at visitors, but eminently suitable for school project work. Lovers of Jamaican music can keep up by checking the charts and new releases in the Gleaner’s sister paper, The Star, which shares this site.
