An assessment report into a sixth-form college has been closed because it has met the conditions of its improvement notice and is no longer graded “inadequate” by Ofsted.

Gateway Sixth Form College in Leicester received an “inadequate” grade after an Ofsted inspection in October 2016, triggering an assessment by the then sixth-form college commissioner. In a subsequent report, the commissioner set out a range of areas for improvement for the college. The report said managers had failed to sustain the previous good quality of provision, quality assurance arrangements were weak and did not lead to good outcomes for students.

Three monitoring visits and a full inspection later, the sixth-form college was found to have improved from a grade 4 to a 3 and the notice was lifted.

Commitment to improve

In its most recent report from January, Ofsted inspectors found that leadership and governance had recently been strengthened.

“Governors’ shared commitment to college improvement, their increasing expertise and stronger challenge to leaders and managers have contributed to recent improvements in the rates of students’ progress,” the report stated.
