In One Girl School by Jon Blake, illustrated by Tony Ross (Oxford University Press pound;3.99), Bernie is the only girl in a school threatened with closure. When the teachers act strangely and end up in detention, she takes charge and convinces the inspectors that all is well.

In Changing Places by Narinder Dhami, illustrated by Jonathan Allen (Oxford University Press pound;4.99), two boys’ records get mixed up on the first day of school. Jordan, previously never out of trouble, finds that not every teacher is against him; Alex, maths genius, experiences the opposite. Each enjoys being someone else. Both books show how turning everyday things on their head gives unexpected insights, and entice readers in Years 2 to 4 with slapstick humour.
