FRANCE: Spending on education will rise by more than 4 per cent in 2002 to allow for the 14,442 new posts in the education system.
This will amount to half of all public-sector jobs created under next year’s budget plans. The allocation - from nursery to the end of secondary education - rose to 23 per cent of state spending, allowing for nearly 11,000 new posts, which include upgrading 800 primary teachers and an extra 1,500 trainees. Jack Lang, education minister, also gained funding for initiatives to extend the teaching of foreign languages at primary school, develop artistic and cultural education and expand information and communication technologies in the classroom.
