When Martin Stephen says that public schools are becoming the “sole preserve of the super-rich”, he is stating the bleeding obvious (“An inability to evolve is a dangerous thing”, TES, 20 April). This is already the case for elite schools such as Eton, with boarding fees of #163;30,000 and a school uniform that costs #163;1,000.
As for the tiny number of scholarships, they don’t exactly go to the poor, but more to the children of distressed gentlefolk.
State schools have to provide data to show the proportion of pupils receiving free school meals. Perhaps public schools should be required to release their figures.
