Author’s gong
English
An Edinburgh-based author has won an award set up to encourage Scottish writing for school-age children. Alette Willis was given Floris Books’ annual Scottish children’s fiction gong, the Kelpies Prize, for her book How to Make a Golem (and Terrify People), at a ceremony at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. It will be published on 17 November.
Hello, Dolly
Literacy
Children’s Minister Angela Constance met Dolly Parton earlier this month to promote a scheme which gives Scotland’s looked-after children free books every month until they are five. The Scottish Government, Scottish Book Trust and the singer’s Dollywood Foundation collaborated to bring her Imagination Library initiative to Scotland.
Safety first
pse
Primary schools are being encouraged to register for Road Safety Week 2011, (21-27 November). The event is co-ordinated by the charity Brake. Primaries can play a vital role in preventing road death and injury by teaching road-safety in lessons, assemblies and pupil-led campaigns, the charity says.

Flower power
Photography
A free exhibition of photographs of local wild flowers with information about their medicinal uses and folklore is at Hawick Museum until 25 September. The pictures show landmarks which pupils in the area will recognise. Curator Richard White said visitors would be surprised by how many common wild plants can be poisonous and how many came from abroad, often brought for use as medicines.
