- Children from six to 18 are being asked to paint the monarch’s portrait for a Jubilee campaign called The Children’s Queen. Judges will include art critic Brian Sewell, art historian John Julius Norwich and Sir Timothy Clifford, director of the National Gallery of Scotland. - The Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival, Edinburgh 7-14 May, returns for its 23rd annual programme of theatre for children and young people. Highlights include productions from eight countries and a feast of homegrown Scottish talent.

- Dalreoch Primary in West Dunbartonshire held a showcase last Thursday to highlight its work in an iPad pilot. Robots were the inspiration for work in language, science and technologies. Children learned about robots and programmed them when Generation Science staff from the Edinburgh International Science Festival visited the school.

- Swinton Primary in Glasgow is the first school in the city to win a Level 2 Unicef UK Rights Respecting School award. The scheme encourages schools to place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of its ethos and curriculum.
