Award winners
Media education
Pupils from Greenfaulds High in Cumbernauld and students from LensHeads, the North Lanarkshire film school, have won a top award at the fourth annual National Gaelic Film Awards, FilmG. This year’s competition theme was “Air an Stairsnich”“On the Threshold” and the pupils’ interpretation won them the award for best film in the 12-17 age category.

Outdoor learning
A new charity supporting the work of Edinburgh City Council’s Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Education has been launched. Friends of Lagganlia will raise funds to help with the running of the facility and promote environmental education and sustainability. Lagganlia offers residential courses, away-days and school trips.

Pupils from six East Renfrewshire secondary schools recently showed off their catering skills at the council’s annual culinary arts banquet at St Mirren Stadium in Paisley. The council has been working in partnership with Reid Kerr College and En Croute catering to provide S56 pupils with the opportunity to gain qualifications in health and safety, hospitality and catering.

The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is relaunching the RADA Shakespeare Certificate on an international basis with a new syllabus and format for 2012. It will be available to people of all ages in all countries, with Skype exams now running.

Citizenship
A gala dinner for 280 guests, organised by pupils and staff of St Maurice’s High in Cumbernauld, raised pound;4,000 in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust last month. The organisers feared they would have to postpone the event when the original venue, Westerwood Hotel, was damaged by an electrical fire, but the Crowne Plaza hotel in Glasgow stepped into the breach.
