Science

Two hundred and fifty pupils from eight Kilmarnock primaries - Annanhill, Gargieston, Shortlees, Bellfield, Crosshouse, Silverwood, Onthank and Park School - have taken part in the third annual science fair to be hosted by Grange Academy. Pupils built and launched air rockets and used microscopes to analyse tropical bugs.

Fiona McGarry, a lecturer at the University of Dundee’s School of Education, is conducting a national survey on Scottish primary teachers’ use of stories in the classroom as part of a research project on primary practice. Enterprise

St Joseph’s Primary in Linlithgow and Cedarbank Special School in Livingston have won the West Lothian primary school enterprise challenge for their work in pottery and jewellery respectively. The pupils and teachers were presented with cheques from Kirknewton pottery business Potter Around to match the profit they had made.

Rock on

Geology

Edinburgh’s geological past has been brought to life for children by a new project, Rock Opera, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Created by Edinburgh charity Hoda, Rock Opera is composed of a short animated film, an online game and a free mobile phone application aimed at families, schools and other activity providers. The project will be launched on 4 April at Edinburgh International Science Festival.

The Take Life On campaign is giving primary pupils across Scotland the opportunity of a lifetime to join Olympic ice-skater Sinead Kerr on the ice and try their hand at the sport.
