Edinburgh City Council and Sage publishers have produced a “cutting edge” book about early education. Early Childhood Practice: Froebel Today describes radical techniques devised by the German educationalist and how they can be applied.

The trial Seafood in Schools project will go nationwide for three years, following confirmation by the Scottish government.

The project has been operating for the past year in 10 school clusters around the country, teaching children how Scottish seafood reaches our plates, and why eating it is healthy. Visit www.seafood inschools.org

Citizenship

Children in the east end of Glasgow created an audio-visual mural showcasing their hopes for a future free from violence. The StreetsAhead project, run by the Children’s Parliament, involved P6-7 pupils from St Michael’s, St Anne’s and Dalmarnock primaries. Workshops encouraged them to think about their lives and communities, leading to a mural designed over five days by 20 children.

Award winners

Enterprise

St Joseph’s Primary and Cedarbank Special School have won a West Lothian enterprise challenge. Pupils and teachers were presented with cheques representing the profits they made. Special mention was given to Williamston Primary, which made the highest overall profit. Schools spent profits on trips, learning resources, equipment and charities.

Children from Royal Mile Primary and Edinburgh’s sports leader, Deidre Brock, ditched their shoes and wore trainers for all of Monday. National Sport Your Trainers Day was a way of encouraging people to support the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Councillor Brock also highlighted that Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool is reopening this month.
