Targets on literacy miss the mark

I have just been involved with yet another school sent reeling by its Ofsted visit, in which inspectors found the teaching very good, children well behaved and motivated, governors supportive and well informed, and the environment safe and conducive to good learning. The Sats results alone were deemed unsatisfactory, so the school was given notice to improve.

The school team and community are in a state of distress. Is it any wonder that we have such problems attracting good-quality teachers into what was once a high-morale profession?

Pat O’Byrne, Former deputy head, Merstham, Surrey.
