AT LEAST one in eight trainee teachers fails to make the transition from college to the classroom, schools minister Estelle Morris has admitted.

Thirteen per cent of those in the final year of an initial teacher-training course failed to qualify in 1997-98, the latest year for which figures are available.

The highest drop-out rate is in maths, designated by ministers as a shortage subject. Oe in five trainee maths teachers did not gain qualified-teacher status in 1997-98. Students on physical education courses are the least likely to leave, with a drop-out rate of only 7 per cent. In all, more than 2,000 trainees failed to become qualified teachers.

The statistics were provided in response to a parliamentary question from James Clappison, the Tory education spokesperson.
