Joe Davies has become the 14th master of Haileybury, a co-educational independent boarding school in Hertfordshire. He joins Haileybury from Sutton Valence School and Sutton Valence Prep in Maidstone, Kent, where he was head. He previously spent six years as deputy head at St John’s School in Leatherhead, Surrey, and 14 years at Tonbridge School in Kent. Mr Davies replaces Stuart Westley, who has become general secretary of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools. Mr Westley was principal of King William’s College, Isle of Man, for seven years before becoming master of Haileybury for 13 years.
Patrick Helps has been appointed chair of the advisory board for the sixth-form career academy in hospitality and catering at The Bulwell Academy, Nottingham. The academy develops practical and vocational skills to prepare young people for work through subjects including finance and business, tourism and engineering. Mr Helps is the former vice-chairman of Hardys amp; Hansons brewery.
Karl Hopper-Young has been appointed as chairman of the South East regional board for the National Skills Academy for Financial Services. He is an expert in financial education and professional development and is director of Sussex Independent Financial Advisers. He will be working with Stephen Smith, the South East regional director, to oversee development of the skills academy in the region. In partnership with employers it offers national centres of excellence in education, skills training and development.
Roger Luxton has retired as corporate director for children’s services and deputy chief executive at Barking and Dagenham Council in east London. Mr Luxton entered the role in February 2006. He was first appointed as principal inspector in 1990 and director of education, arts and libraries in September 2002. He was responsible for inspection and advisory services to schools and the provision of lifelong learning opportunities, as well as for the development of arts, heritage and libraries. In June 2009, he was appointed OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to education. Since 2006, he has established the new children’s services department and Barking and Dagenham’s Children’s Trust. Helen Jenner is replacing Mr Luxton. She is currently service head of early years and learning at Tower Hamlets in east London. Ms Jenner started her teaching career in West Sussex before moving to Barking and Dagenham as head of maths and science at Five Elms Primary School. She joined the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) as a maths consultant and became the youngest headteacher in ILEA by taking the helm at Harbinger Primary School in Tower Hamlets.

The principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College has attacked reality TV shows such as `Big Brother’. Writing in the `Gloucestershire Echo’ last week, Mrs Tuck said: “In a world of uncertainties, one thing that is guaranteed is that I shall never enter the `Big Brother’ household. I cannot comprehend what motivates someone to want to surrender their privacy in such a way and be subjected to the scrutiny and the opprobrium of the television public.”
What a pity. She would have made a fine addition to the show’s 11th and final cohort next year.
