If the Teacher Training Agency is a quango, why should Anthea Millett expect to have a major input into the affairs of a General Teaching Council?
I imagine the British Medical Association and the Law Society are autonomous bodies who deal authoritatively with matters medical and legal. Both these groups use considerable sums of taxpayers’ money, but appears to have little lay interference in their professional life. If teachers are to achieve real professional status, their general council must have a similar basis of freedom from too much outside interference and have a much greater say in what goes in schools.
