This simple, effective construction kit is a lot of fun to build and use. It will also help teachers explore issues about sustainable, alternative energy through wind power.
The pack comes with comprehensive notes, including a clear step by step guide to making the model. But the beauty of this kit is its adaptability - it is suitable for teachers at every key stage who are involved with science and design and technology education.
Electricity can be generated with a choice of a buzzer or an LED to show the output. The model can also do mechanical work, such as lifting weights with a pulley. Accelerating or slowing down the rotation from the windmill blades can be achieved through gearing using pulleys and elastic bands.
The kit includes enough material to experiment with a range of blade designs. And if the wind conditions outside are unsuitable, teachers can demonstrate the model inside with the help of a fan, hairdryer or vacuum cleaner.
This is an enjoyable, hands- on way to address a serious global issue, and teach science, engineering and technology at the same time. A very welcome resource.
