The tough get going over editor’s argument

Gerard Kelly is partly right in his editorial on challenging failure. It is true that the “unreconstructed Left” refuses to accept any form of accountability, preferring to excuse underachievement rather than engage with parental aspirations for their children. That is why the inevitable calls at the Easter conferences for the removal of Michael Gove and Sir Michael Wilshaw are ridiculous and irrelevant. There is, however, a job to do at Ofsted. Simply rating schools by test scores does not answer the question as to how meaningful the scores are. Nor does it assess whether students are confident and responsible. Ofsted can make or break a school. It cannot be asking too much to expect inspectors to seek greater discernment and humility.

Simon Horne, Deputy headteacher, Alexandra Park School, London.
