Employment tribunals will soon be able to impose tough penalties on people who bring spurious claims. New rules will mean that costs for unreasonable or vexatious behaviour will rise from pound;500 to pound;100,000. Tribunals will be able to take into account unreasonable behaviour by claimants’ representatives. Tribunals ill also have the power to strike out weak claims that are unlikely to succeed.
Local authorities spend about pound;30 million per year on legal fees, employment tribunal awards and salaries for teachers and heads who have been suspended while allegations against them are investigated.
