The new edition of Working With German Level 1 from Mary Glasgow (Coursebook Pounds 10.99, Cassette 15.99) introduces additional exercises, more regular grammar round-ups and summaries, and extra listening and reading materials for 16 to19-year-olds. The authors, Peter Lupson, Doug Embleton and Elspeth Eggington, have used traditional methodology throughout: taped dialogues are followed by comprehension and grammar exercises.

The content is broadly functional-notional and the structured approach will appeal to adult and vocational learners, who may well use it on their own.

Teachers will find it a good basic course, but they will have to work hard to make it come alive in lessons.
