Videoconferencing is a great idea, but for many schools the benefits do not justify the cost. Few schools have regular videoconferencing sessions, so there’s always the temptation to spend money on ICT resources that are used more often.
For schools that don’t want to invest in videoconferencing equipment but are keen to use the technology, the Public Record Office (PRO) has a solution. Its multimedia education room will give secondary and primary schools the opportunity to make virtual visits to schools and museums in the UK and overseas. As well as video-conferencing facilities, the room has interactive whiteboards and internet connections.
Schools can book themed workshops for key stages 2, 3 and 4, which include Tudor Times, Victorian Life, First World War Experience and Victorian Murder Mystery. Workshops for ASA-level students are also available.
The facilities will also enable distant schools with video-conferencing facilities to take part in sessions with PRO education staff.
The facilities are free, and classes of around 30 (including adults) can be accommodated. Staff are available to set up conferencing sessions, and can organise individual themed workshops.
