The first virtual Education Action Zone to investigate how information and communications technology can raise standards has been approved by the Department for Education and Employment. It will link 24 schools more than 100 miles apart in Kent and Somerset. Each school will have video conferencing equipmnt and better access to email for both pupils and teachers. Chris Gerry, headteacher of one of the participating schools, Hugh Christie Technology College in Tonbridge, Kent, said that the zone aimed to give each of the 11,000 pupils a laptop.
